Running and Fussing

Ryan and Ruby went for a run today when Ry got home from work. It was unusually cold out today - in the 60's - so we bundled Ruby in a mismatched assortment of pants, hats, socks and a jacket. She loved it!
In other news, life with a newborn can be wonderfully trying at times. Ruby's "fussy" time typically starts after I feed her around 8 or 9pm. Most nights after an hour of screaming her head off she's asleep, but some nights she just keeps going until I feed her again around 11 or 12...and a couple of times in her short life she has continued to cry into the wee hours of the morning before finally falling asleep. It's incredible.

Even now, as I type this Ryan is sitting next to me on the couch with his index fingers stuck in his ears. I just have to keep reminding myself that babies are supposed to cry for a few hours a day - it's good for them. She is such a doll during her "non-fussy" times, so I guess it's okay.

I remember Maddie being on that same "fussy" schedule. I'd feed her around 8 or 9, then she'd scream, cry, and fuss till midnight. It drove us crazy, beccause we were so exhausted. We tried everything we could to make her stop crying, but eventually learned that she just needed to get her energy out, and learned that closing the door for a while didn't hurt her a bit. :) She would cry if we were there, or if we weren't. You guys are awesome parents. These are precious times, even though they are LOUD times!

oh, dear. that is the worst. even though you know babies cry, it's still hard when it's YOUR baby crying - very hard. what i kept (and keep) reminding myself is that babies change SO FAST - nothing stays the same for very long, including the fussy times. you're doing great! this, too, shall pass.

Please let me know when you'd like a little break (Note: it's not an option, I am requesting that you let us watch Ruby! As you know, I learned how to handle a screaming baby and I also learned that I desperately needed a break at times!). In addition to watching Ruby while you get some time away, we'd love to have you both over soon!

That's when the swing and the paci came in handy. Put him right to sleep. I'm sure you have, but just in case you haven't...you should try it.

Ahh, yes. Reading this post brought back some memories of Teagan's early days...though it seems to last forever while you're in it, it's amazing how quickly you forget those days (I'll be reminded of them again in about 9 weeks!). :) Keep taking deep breaths, know that you are not doing anything "wrong," and know that you and Ryan are doing a fabulous job!! Ruby is so adorable!

Not sure if you have already tried this but when my wife and I had our first child he had these never ending screaming episodes every night. Something we read was to try turning on the vacuum cleaner. The noise is soothing to a baby and always calmed him down. Plus as a bonus, my wife rarely had to vac the house.
